^Sir H.H. Kitchener, C-i-Chief of our Sudan Army, has been killed by a poisenous arrow from a
Sudanese warrior. The heroic general was just retiring for the night when he was surprised by an
assassin.
^His death will have severe consequences for the continuation of the campaign of liberation of
British-Egyptian Sudan. Though no territories will be handed back to the enemy, our forces are
reported to leave the Sudan within a week and return to Egypt, while protecting all civilians who
wish to depart the Sudan with them.
^The situation bears remarkable resemblance to the fateful day in 1884 when General Gordon
was killed, resulting in the chaotic retreat of British troups and civilians, after which followed

The strategically placed town of Kassala had been occupied by Italian forces under General
Baratieri in 1894 after a Dervish raid on Italian territory. The occupation was provisionally
recognized by Egypt without prejudice to her sovereign rights, and 900 Italian regulars and
irregulars established themselves in a well-built fort.
^The severe defeat at Adowa in 1896, the disgrace of Baratieri, the destruction of his army, 
and the fall of tge Crispi Cabinet rudely dispelled the African ambitions of Italy. Being now
more of an encumbrance, the new Italian Government offered to retrocede Kassala to Egypt.
The offer was accepted and an arrangement was made.
